Just So You Know

I'm spending a week in Raleigh, NC, visiting children and grandchildren. I've been here before, plenty of times, but never for more than a day or two.

It's still winter in Raleigh
Now that I'm here for a bit longer, I know the true secret of North Carolina. It's cold in the winter!

I thought I was in the Sunbelt. But yesterday morning I checked weather.com, and found it was 42 degrees in Raleigh -- and also 42 degrees back home in Pennsylvania!

Okay, but the weather report predicted the temperature was only going up to 48 in Pennsylvania, whereas it would hit 56 in Raleigh, with partly cloudy skies. That's better.

But then I found out something else. The weather report can be wrong. It rained all afternoon in Raleigh, one of those cold, raw rains that chill you to the bone.

But here's one sign of life
I'm probably not reporting anything new to people who live around here. I'm just sayin', to anyone wanting to retire in North Carolina, or vacation here in January, bring a nice warm coat!

Anyway, we're soon to be back on the road again, heading farther south to Charleston, SC, where the weather . . . well, it can be chilly there in the winter, too, but it's guaranteed to be at least a few degrees warmer than North Carolina.

I too thought NC was warmer than that. Right now we have 51 degrees outside, before dawn, but it will drop by twenty degrees during the day before we get some cold weather tonight. We're way north, but we get warmth from the Pacific Ocean. :-)

Our weather has been all over. Today is supposed to be a lovely 65 degrees. That's nice for this time of year. But tomorrow it's supposed to drop to 47 and rain.... We were trying to get over to Bodega Bay( which is above SF to camp but not with those temperatures. Have a good time in S.C,

True. We even had snow several years and one ice storm during the time we lived in Atlanta. Much warmer winter here in S. California! Supposed to hit 81 today but that is an aberration. Enjoy your travels.

Our temperatures here are in the 60s, 70s and 80s. And there is snow on Mauna Kea, the volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Enjoy your trip.

One of my brothers lives near Raleigh so I was aware of the weather there. It's only been in the 60's here in Venice, FL and that feels pretty darn cold although it would be warm in VT. Matter of perspective I guess.

I see spider man has found you. That tree is really beautiful. That is a sign even with warm winters, we haven't seen yet. Enjoy searching for the sunbelt.

The CArolinas are not in 3 feet of snow. I think the weather there is just fine, but my daughter agrees with you.

I guess like Olga says, it's mostly a matter of perspective. When I get to SC I hope I have a new perspective.

I guess I'd try to ignore the weather and enjoy the time with the family. Fortunately, you can carry coats in the trunk of your car!

The Fahrenheit temperatures in your post made me think of my recent trip to California. I'm used to Celsius in Europe so I changed the rental car dashboard to that - I wonder if the subsequent renters have figured out how to change it back yet?
Isn't about time the US went metric? After the initial confusion, wouldn't it be easier?

I live outside Raleigh, NC. The good thing about NC is if you wait a couple of days, the weather changes. It's supposed to be 60's & 70's this week!

David, yes it would, but Americans can be pretty stubborn. Donna -- I guess I was there the wrong week!

Never been to Raleigh, but looks warmer than Connecticut. Someday I'd love to visit.

Those are beautiful blossoms. I don’t think we’ve been to Raleigh. I’m in Chicago right now and it’s starting to snow and cold. I got used to it pretty quickly though. I’m OK so long as I have the right clothing.

That tree is beautiful. It will put a smile on those dark, rainy days.
