Where Am I Now?

B and I have traveled some 530 miles west from Cape Cod, a sixth of the way across the country .  . . and yet we're still on what most people regard as the East Coast.

But I'm sure you only need one guess to figure out where we are now.

It's my daughter, who is having her bridal shower in Buffalo, a place where she lived for two years and where she met her fiance. B has already married off her two sons (and even has a grandchild!) but this is a first for me. So since you all have more experience at this than I have, I'd like to solicit some advice . . . but that's for my next post.

For now, I'm enjoying the sights and sounds of an old city that is getting some new life breathed into it. There are two big colleges here, the University of Buffalo and Buffalo State. There are a lot of young people around. And the state is building a big new medical complex here to help revitalize the city.

Meantime, we're staying in an old mental institution that has been renovated into the Henry Hotel, named after the architect Henry Hobson Richardson who designed the complex in the late 1800s. We're staying on the second floor, in a room with 15-foot ceilings . . . don't ask me what's up in those towers!

Congratulations and enjoy your time with your daughter and her fiance! What an amazing looking building and so great that they turned it into a hotel rather than demolishing it.

I'm enjoying following your travel adventures. You're visiting a part of the country I've yet to explore.

Your photos make me want to go back there some day.

One kudo I will give our Governor Cuomo: he has certainly revitalized most of New York State. He has poured billions into fixing up the state parks, hiking & skiing trails, public bathrooms, camping facility, lakes, ponds....the works. He has also invested millions into fixing up Niagara Falls. We were there two years ago and there was construction everywhere!
New York is also the only state that prohibits any type of fracking.
And now with Cuomo's new free college tuition (provided you stay in NY for 4 years after graduation otherwise your whole tuition bill comes due and payable!)
Cuomo is trying everything he can to have people stay in the state. For us, it's working. Senior discounts on property taxes, low cost health insurance, excellent medical care and the best consumer protection laws in the country, I find it mind boggling that people leave this state in droves.
Too bad.
But we're drawing in big tourist crowds. Cuomo even set up texting stops along all the highways that also sell anything made or produced in NY State.
I love NY State but I despise NYC. That's another comment. I'm in a NY State of mind right now and feeling good. I don't need anything to bring me down like NYC does.
Have fun!

Love to see an old building rescued and repurposed. Sounds like a great trip.

I'm chuckling over that last sentence. It looks like a nice place to stay. (Now that it is for those that aren't committed.)

I've never been to Buffalo, but you have made me think it would a nice place to go.

Congratulations on soon becoming a father of the bride.

I am a former New jersey resident who married a Buffalonian, and moved here about 30 years ago. It gets a bad rap; thanks for showing some of the positive.

Love that first picture of the falls, and I'm glad you've got a nice hotel room in that place. Ceilings are not ever made that high any more, are they? I hope you share some pictures of the event with me. :-)

I've visited Cape Cod and attended the music played in the evening, also visited Martha's Vineyard and saw the dirt road that led to Jackie Kennedy's place there. Loved Nantucket too. Niagara Falls is lovely on the Canadian side also but I think you might need your passport to cross over now. If you think your daughter's wedding is scary wait until you see her when you are expecting your first grandchild. It is quite a realization that you are now going to be a grandparent.

One more thing, your About Me says you live in New York. Didn't you move to southern PA recently?

Cindi -- I think by and large you are right; but I have to admit we moved out of NY state mostly b/c of the high cost of living in general and the high taxes in particular. And Anon., you are absolutely right ... guess I'd better change my bio. Thanks!

When you get to BUF, you're "almost" in the Midwest. Attitudes in western New York are decidedly different from those east of I-81, and that's a positive statement. Glad to have you here, if only for a while.
