The Song Is Over

We know from raising children that the days are long, but the years are short. So it is with vacation. The days are long and languid. But suddenly, before you know it, the time is gone and we have to go home.

Just thought this was cool: License plate map posted in Cape Cod restaurant

Then we must say goodbye to that interlude in life when we leave behind our day-to-day concerns to float on a tide of fun and friends and family and . . . way too much food.

In the sand at Harwichport beach

So it is with us. Our time on Cape Cod has come to an end. We are spending a couple of days around Boston with family, and then the long car ride home.

Evening sky over Nantucket Sound

But we have some memories. We have some photos. It's been a good vacation, so we go home refreshed and renewed, ready to settle back to our usual routine.

The day is over

And, really, aren't we glad to land back home to resume our real, normal lives? There's always next year. But, for now, the song is over . . .

Yes, it is always good to go but always good to get back home. Glad you had such a good vacation.

Oh, the song is never over. You can sing at home, too.

Glad you made some good memories. Life is like that: the good times fly by. :-)

Making memories is the most important part of life, because when the time comes that you cannot get out and about, those will sustain you.

Something to remember and perhaps something to look forward to in a next vacation.

Sometimes we have to go home to rest and recuperate from the good times spent on holiday. Evidently, it's supposed to be the other way around. Who knew?

I've gotten to the point where even on crooks country trips two weeks is max. Three weeks I CAN handle but by then I'm seriously be called home.

Tom, so glad you and B had a good vacation... and made wonderful memories. I've never been to Cape Cod, but from your pics, would love to visit. Your post reminds me again of that saying, "Don't cry because it's over, Smile because it happened."

Bittersweet and exhilarating! Your descriptions have made me think about another trip to the northeast.

Savouring your days, Tom, as I do. Stretching them out, reflecting, sharing the photos. We just never know. Not in a morbid way. But we know.

Ah, an evocative short piece. We all can relate, for certain.

I hate that leaving feeling when vacation ends. But I also love that coming home feeling...especially if I had time to clean before I went on vacation. Nothing ruins a vacation "high" as quick as a dirty or cluttered house.

I have loved reading your Cape Cod posts, such nostalgia. This is the week I always took my kids to Brewster for a visit. I do miss it, thanks for the memories.

I always hate when vacations end. Beautiful photos. It sounds like it was idyllic.
