What's Wrong?

Last night I felt a little off. Nothing serious. No headache. Just a little spacey. Maybe a touch of an upset stomach. It can happen when you've been cooped up in your house for days, weeks, months at a time.

I went to bed at my normal 11 p.m., but woke up at 3 a.m. Found the bathroom. Stumbled back into bed, fell into a fitful sleep. I woke up again, and it was still dark. Couldn't see the clock, didn't know what time it was. I had a little headache now, and knew it would get worse.

It was hot. I pushed the covers off me, but couldn't get back to sleep.

I drifted in and out for I don't know how long. Had a nightmare. I was on a golf course on the first tee, and as I swung I fell backward and shanked the ball into a bush. I rode the golf cart up the fairway, then had to take a long walk downhill to try to find the ball, rummaging through the underbrush. Something else happened, something completely unrelated, but I can't remember what it was.

Then I woke up again. With a definite headache.

I sensed B getting out of bed. I rolled over on my side, trying to find sleep again. Next thing I knew there was a rumbling on the street outside my bedroom window. The big leaf-loader was starting up, at 7:30 a.m., vacuuming up the piles of leaves that people had raked into the gutter.

I sat up and paused for a moment, trying to clear my head. Then I hauled myself out of bed and wandered into the bathroom, feeling drowsy and headachy. I avoided looking in the mirror, then came out and got dressed and began to wonder. Could this be it? The first signs of Covid?

I started toward the kitchen, but instead detoured back into the bathroom. I opened the cabinet drawer, took out the thermometer and jammed it into my mouth, under my tongue. While I waited -- about two minutes -- I washed my hands. Thoroughly. For at least 30 seconds. Under warm water.

The beeper on the thermometer went off. I pulled the thermometer out, turned it over and read the display. 97.4 degrees. That's perfectly normal for me.

I finally made it into the kitchen, brewed some coffee, had breakfast. I shook two Tylenol out of the bottle and washed them down with orange juice. Slowly, throughout the morning, my headache receded. Later, while reading my book, I took a short nap.

Now it's getting on toward 4 p.m. I feel a little washed out, from lack of sleep, but I don't feel sick. The headache is gone. I take my temperature again. It's still 97.4. I guess I don't have Covid after all.

I hope you stay Covid free, Tom. I think I had it back in late March when my husband got it. My case was so mild that I suspect that by now any antibodies I developed are gone. It's pretty scary out there right now. Everywhere.

Anxiety makes it appearance every now and then. Easy to turn a headache into COVID, but what a relief when it turns out to be a false alarm.

I hope you have a better night tonight, Tom. And thank you for the reminder, I need to add a thermometer to my Amazon cart. :)

I totally get it. Each time I get a wee headache (doesn't happen often), I have the same Covid thoughts. And take my temperature. Twice, at least.

Thank goodness, Tom. It's autumn - and we change as does the season. Hope you continue to be well.

It is so easy these days to question any abnormal symptoms and the stress of what it might be can't help but make things worse. Sure hope that was a one time thing for you. Stay safe and well.

Hoiw stressful for you Tom!I think we're all feeling overly anxious these days, an underlying tension that builds up, we are living so far outside the "normal". As I type, I have my mask hanging off one ear ready to go back in my face if my cleaner, who's also wearing one, comes into the room I'm in. Crazy making.

Sometimes that happens. At least you don't have to go to work every day. You are retired and can take naps during the day or just take it easy.

It's the next day and I'm feeling okay. It's a comfort to know that other people occasionally go through this same anxiety. And Gigi, you are so right ... at least we don't have to get up and drag ourselves into to work!

If you don't already have one a pulse oximeter would be a good cheap addition to your medical supplies. This cheap item will tell you when your oxygen saturation level is too low. With Covid ramping up again knowing when you absolutely must go to a hospital could be a game changer.

Yes, Fred, that's good advice. Thanks!

Tom, I think that at our age we have good and bad days. For most of us that are relatively healthy, the good outnumber the bad. Still... there are days when I wake up feeling 'not quite right'. It's usually a day when I'm either headachy, tired, bones ache, and just not myself. And yes, these days we think, "Covid!", but if there's no fever and whatever it is goes away, I tend to believe it's just old age. Glad you're feeling better.

Every little cold or blood pressure change or headache becomes that frightening Covid.I will be so glad when we go back to a less fearful normal. I am glad you are better. Drink fluids and take care of yourself.

I'm so glad you're feeling better. I hope you got a better night's sleep last night.
I had a disrupted sleep last night. Neighbors making noise at midnight. And that had me not feeling great during the day. Sleep does affect our well being.
Our daughter bought us an oximeter just to keep tabs in case...

My mother died in early April from covid. Her only symptoms were a slight cough and extreme fatigue. I took her to to two clinics and eventually the hospital. The doctors at all three facilities did not think she had covid until the test administered at the hospital came back positive. She died 8 days after being admitted to the hospital. She was never on a ventilator but was administered oxygen and anti-viral drugs. The cause of death was confirmed to be covid.

I caught covid from her and had only a slight cough for about a week. I had no other symptoms. I recovered quickly and have no long term affects that I am aware of. We had been self isolating and fortunately the contact tracing found that we did not pass this virus on to others.

Given my experience,I think it would be prudent to get a covid test. These are now readily available and the results are returned in just a couple of days.
