Never, Ever Buy a New Computer

Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit. But please, do yourself a favor. Don't listen to that guy in the computer store who tells you, "Oh, don't worry, the new one will work just the same as the one you had."

I collected a virus on my computer the other day, and when I couldn't get rid of it myself, I called my local computer store. I know the people there. I visit them once or twice a year, and I bought a new laptop just last month. (But the truth is, I prefer my desktop.) The guy who owns it is friendly and helpful. He doesn't focus exclusively on the 20-something crowd, and he's happy to spend a little extra time with a customer to explain how things work. And, perhaps most important, he doesn't look down his nose at people like me, who have a little gray hair on their heads (okay, a lot of gray hair) and are not MIT graduates (okay, who had trouble in high school algebra).

So I tell the computer guy on the phone what's gone wrong, and he instantly knows what it is. But it's not something he can help me with over the phone. I have to bring it in.

I unplug my computer and, on my way out the door, grab the old receipt from when I bought it. I notice the computer is four years old. Driving over to the store, I wonder, maybe I'd be better off getting a new machine, rather than spending money to fix this old one.

So I make this suggestion when I get to the store. It will cost between $125 and $150 to fix this four-year-old white elephant, my computer guru tells me. Or I could get a new one -- faster, better, with more more memory, more options, more capabilities -- for just over $600.

"Okay," I said. "But I don't need anything fancy. I mostly surf the net and use word processing. I don't need anything that will, you know, make the gunfire on my video game look more spectacular, with more realistic blood spurting out from the aliens I slaughter."

He laughed. "I get it," he said, "something simple."

"And, honestly, I don't want to have to learn a whole new system, either. I just want to be able to use it."

"Don't worry. The new one will work just the same as your old one. You won't even know the difference."

I go home happy, looking forward to an upgraded machine. I go back to the store the next day. "So, is there anything I have to know?" I ask.

"Nope," he said. "This will work the same as your old computer."

"What about hooking up the printer?" I ask.

"It will do it automatically," he replied. "Just go to your 'Start' button and follow the instructions."

I take home the computer and go to plug it in. The first thing I notice is that there are fewer ports on the back of the computer. There's one cable back there that I can't plug in, because there's no spot for it. But I try out the computer, and it seems to work. Still, I wonder, what's that orphan cable all about?

I go to the "Start" button to hook up my printer. I can't find the instructions the computer guy told me would be there.

So I call him up. First, he tells me not to worry about the missing port. That one is for sound -- and I've got the right ones. I guess he's right. The sound coming out of this new computer seems okay. But I'm still slightly unsettled about that cable hanging out there behind my computer desk.

He then leads me to the right place to hook up the printer -- I'm glad I called because I never would have found it myself.

We hang up, and I go back to start work. As I said, I mostly do word processing, so I call up one of my files -- and I don't have Microsoft Word, like I did on my old computer. I have something called "Libre." It looks completely different from what I'm used to, and also from what I have on my laptop.

So I'm back on the phone. "What's this word processing?" I ask. "I use Microsoft Word."

"Oh, you don't get Microsoft Word. You have to pay extra for the Microsoft Office Suite. This is what we give you instead."

     "How much extra for Word?"

"It's about $130. But really, Libre works just the same. You won't even know the difference."

He then leads me through a swift introductory course in Libre -- which, of course, is entirely different from Word. It looks different. The functions are located in different places, It even saves files with a different label. He shows me how I can "trick" Libre into saving something as a Word file. But later, when I try to do it on my own, I can't make it work. I cannot save it as a doc file, or docx file, but only as something that looks like it's part of the Russian alphabet.

     "Arghhhh!"

Then last night I went to the movies. When I got home I went to check my email. My computer was off. That's funny. I didn't turn it off. Had we lost power for a while?

I turned it on and checked my email. This morning the computer was off again, and later it shut itself off when I took a break to have breakfast.

Apparently, this computer -- this computer that will work just the same way as my old computer (despite having a completely different word processing program) -- has an automatic shutoff function. So if you leave the computer to take a bathroom break or get a drink, you have to be quick about it. No more malingering in the kitchen.

Right now I hate my new computer, and I hate my computer guy. I just hope I get used to it. I'm trying to look on the bright side. Who knows? Maybe the automatic shutoff will mean I'll take fewer, shorter breaks -- and I'll end up improving my productivity!

I'm really sorry. My wife would jump out the window screaming if she ever had to take care of the challenges that come with having a computer. I tell her that if only she could think of them as a fun challenge, she might even find that she enjoys them, but it just isn't going to happen. I wish I were there with you because nothing you describe is hard to fix. Even with your old computer, it probably would have done okay if it had been wiped clean and reloaded, but as you were told, such things cost a lot of money if you have to pay to have them done.

I have a brother-in-law who is a freakin' computer genius. He's not much fun at parties, but he's handy so we keep him around.
I am actually about to search for a laptop for myself. Seems like every time I touch the common one, something goes awry...or so I'm told. (mostly I just turn the sound on. Sound, is that so much to ask??)

My computer works just fine but yesterday Blogger deleted my blog and replaced it with a generic template. It took my son four hours to restore Chubby Chatterbox and it still isn't the same. I guess I need to find someone called a web host--sounds like someone from The Matrix.

Forcing yourself to learn new things will keep your elderly brain from going stagnant. As Snowbrush said, think of it as a fun challenge. Learning shouldn't stop just because you reach a certain age.

FYI: When buying a computer, always find out what software is preinstalled. You may not want some of them or you might want alternatives. The preinstalled software can make a difference in the price of a computer.

Snowbrush said...

Also, for relatively trouble-free computing, buy an Apple.

Anonymous said...

You could have saved yourself a whole heap of trouble if you had just bought an Apple Computer. It really is just plug and play and you could have reloaded your original Word application.

How anyone can buy a Microsoft PC is beyond me.

Yes, you pay more, BUT you would be sooooooooo happy right about now.

Trust me.

I've been using macs since 1997, and became a Mac genius around 1999.

If you want to stay young and hip and on the cusp of reality, buy a MAC. Period.

Rosaria Williams said...

Oh, I just went through that a couple of months ago!

Meryl Baer said...

I have to second and third the motion for a Mac. You can pay $99 and get as many classes as you want from Apple for one year (at your local store and online) - it is a great deal and you learn all about your computer, the software and how to use everything. Those Apple geeks can help with any questions you have...

Rubye Jack said...

Personally, I've always been a PC person and always will be. For one thing, Mac costs one heck of a lot more than a PC and really they do the very same things. My suggestion is go to your local college and take a computer class and quit paying the repair guy for stuff you can easily do. Heck, I'm a girl and I can work these things. My present PC is going on 6 years.

We had to buy a new desktop too. The spouse managed to pick up a virus. We spent the $150. to get it fixed and it never worked right again. We finally bought a new one. We've never been able to make the printer work with it. Anything I want to print I have to do from my laptop. Technology is both a blessing and a curse!

I work in the computer field. If you'd like to learn, buy a book for the CompTIA A+ and tinker with your old computer. Online retailers Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, ect. can offer much better deals than computer stores.

If you are unwilling or unable to learn more about computers, I would suggest a mac mini. They are the least expensive macs, and macs tend to last longer before parts need to be replaced.

FYI, no single component in a 4 year old computer is going to cost more than $50 to replace yourself.

In the process of making life easier and richer in every way, modern computer technology has brought me a whole new type of shock. Once reserved for opening the refrigerator for breakfast and finding it warm or noticing at 3pm on a July Friday that I'm having hot flashes and the temperature inside my home is 83 even though the thermostat is set to 75, my sangfroid can be wrecked and my schedule brought to its knees by a boot up that fails.

Heck, I had a bit of a panic attack when Wikipedia when dark. Who says the human brain isn't adaptable after sixty? Good luck, buddy.

Tom said...

Thx. for the sympathy and advice. I went thru this a few months ago when I looked into a Powerbook. There were 3 problems: 1) It cost $1000 more than the notebook I finally bought; 2) The Apple store is a 35-minute drive, rather than an 8-minute drive, and I didn't see myself doing all that driving to go to the lessons; 3) The salesperson at the Apple store didn't explain much about the Powerbook, she just tried to upsell me on other Apple products between the times she was texting other people on her iPhone.

So I decided I liked my computer guy better. Hope I don't live to regret it.

I used to help people with their computers... up to a point. At the point where I am stumped and as frustrated as the person I am trying to help. I have learned one important thing:

The person I am trying to help never gives me the whole story. I must ask questions and interpret the answers and even then...

I have been playing with computers since 1977, micro computers (what PCs were first called) since 1981 (MS-DOS days). I have built computers from parts, swapped out parts (hard drives, CD-ROMS/writers, DVD units, memory, video cards, and just about everything else), and cleaned up the various problems friends and relatives have run into.

To me, they are simple machines for the most part. I have avoided viruses and Trojans and other malware because I take precautions, use a good anti-malware utility, and am careful to react immediately to anything "odd" occurring.

I feel your pain, though, I truly do.

Hardware can be a puzzle for sure, but everytime I have tackled an issue myself, I have learned something new. I am going to be so clever when I die...I like to think I am keeping my brain exercised by it all. I don't claim to be an expert. I know a guy who knows a guy who does great work. He rebuilt my computer which now works like a charm. Dianne

Bob Lowry said...

The problem isn't really that you need to educate yourself about computers. It is that people who work in computer stores assume those who enter the store are just as comfortable around the machines as they are. That is rarely the case since computers have become as necessary to daily life as a coffee maker and anyone can own one.

Regardless of what the salesman told you, Windows 7 is not the same as Windows XP, which became unavailable over 2 years ago. Software designed for XP won't always work on 7. Same with hardware drivers. The only "fix" is to buy the upgraded 7 OP and you can run a virtual XP program.

Word is now extra, though you can install Word 2003 from old discs if you have them and it will work just fine.

Bottom line: no newer computer will ever work the same as your old one if the operating system has undergone a change. Oh, by the way, you can't upgrade an XP to Windows 7 unless you completely wipe out everything on your hard drive and do a "clean" install. Microsoft never lets you just stay still.

For what it's worth, I have used HP laptops (purchased through their website) since 2006, when I needed a computer for college. It served me well through my undergraduate degree and my second one (which I bought in January, 2011, due to technological advances) is continuing the "problem free" streak now that I am in graduate school. They are much cheaper than an Apple, can be customized to meet most any level of need, and, in my opinion, are more compatible with many of the Wi-Fi networks which seem to be proliferating almost everywhere. That being said, there is certainly nothing wrong with an Apple product. To me, the question was: "Did I need the Mercedes of computers or just a Chevy?" I opted for the Chevy, and I am happy with my choice.

Linda Myers said...

Sorry, but I laughed. So glad I have another couple of years before I'll need a new computer!

In response to your question on my blog, Grand Canyon is about two and a half hours from Sedona. We left town at 10 am, got there at lunchtime, spent five hours in the park, and came home. You can do it in a day trip.

If it isn't snowing in Flagstaff and points north,.

That automatic shut off is probably to save of the life of the computer, and to save on electricity. It’s better for the environment, and better for your bill. Chances are it won’t shut down in less than 15 or even 30 min, maybe longer. All kinds of people watch movies on their computers, so it's got to stay on long enough for that. But, especially with a desktop, if you leave the thing on for days or weeks it can be really bad for the computer. It will end up having to work really hard for simple tasks and the fan might burn out sooner, allowing more dust to collect inside. It might be a pain in the neck waiting for it to turn on, but you just need to remember to always save your work. It's worth more than it hinders really. I’m sure there is a way to change it though, if you don't like the automatic shut off. Call up your guy and ask him, he can probably walk you through the settings to shut off the auto sleep or auto turn off setting. or at least, he'll direct you to someone who can.
I also love Mac's. But if you don't like change that much I don't suggest it. They are different in feel and settings.

Also, you don't have to buy Microsoft Office Suite to get Word. You can go to staples or best buy or something and buy the software for just word, or a bundle that's a lot cheaper. The guy might be nice, but he still runs a buisness and it's his job to SELL. don't forget. ALWAYS explore your options. I like to buy my tech online, my laptop, and my mothers desktop, were both cutom made through dells web page with a AAA discount. And, it's pretty easy too.

Just my two cents -- Open Office has a word processing program that is very similar to Word. Really! It will open all of your Word documents and then can be saved in Open Office. The help is very easy to follow also. The program is called Writer and is free. Love your blog, BTW.

I’m sorry to hear what happened to you. It must have been so frustrating for you at first. It looks like you picked up very well though, since I can see that you have written quite a lot after this. Do you still hate your computer? It would be great to hear your thoughts about your computer now that some time has passed. Hope the warranty support helps you whenever you have trouble, since these supports vary from one brand to another. That’s why it would also be good to check support sections when purchasing a new computer.

It is absolutely infuriating to me that you'd have that experience and, instead of looking at yourself with shame over not having done the slightest bit of research before buying your new computer, come on your blog and post that you "hate your computer guy". Sightings from 60? More like from 06.

Could the guy at the store have made a better job of this? Probably. He could indeed have assumed you didn't care to spend 5 minutes using google to find what a computer actually is and, therefore, what it brings. But is it fair to blame HIM, not for your nigh-complete illiteracy, but for your (now indeed) complete lack of effort towards understanding even the slightest of issues you've come across? No, it isn't.

Next time you're dealing with the purchase of something you don't have a clue about, be responsible and proactive about it. The "guy at the store" was completely right when he said this new computer would be the exact same as the former - because a computer is hardware. You're getting the same you had, only more powerful. The issues you had were with software, and that is not what he is selling, with the exception of the somewhat generic bundled-in OS for convenience and extra charging. The product you are buying is, first and foremost, the assembled physical components that are a computer.

Essentially, you bought the wrong product, and only you are to blame, not the store. You wanted your old system, but all you did was buy a new computer. They are not the same thing. It's like buying a hamburger and complaining it didn't have cheese. That's simply not what you bought, however mistaken you might have been when buying it, and it certainly isn't the seller's fault.

I would last like to say that the title is deplorable. I sincerely hope you haven't got any ideas into anyone's head, and that everyone who's had contact with your blog takes everything with a huge grain of salt.
